Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking

The Kanchenjunga Circuit trek is a thrilling adventure that takes trekkers to both the north and south base camps of Kanchenjunga. This magnificent mountain, standing at a towering height of 8,586m, is the third highest peak in the world.

As it is a remote area trek, a good level of fitness and some trekking experience is desirable. However, despite its remoteness, the trek offers a glimpse into the local people's way of life and the opportunity to visit Ramtang and Oktang Monasteries.

The trek offers breathtaking views of the landscape, which is dotted with rivers, waterfalls, green meadows, rhododendron, birch and pine forests, and the majestic Yalung Glacier. Along the way, trekkers are accompanied by stunning mountain views that are sure to leave an indelible impression.

Located on the far eastern side of Nepal, near the border with Sikkim, Kanchenjunga was thought to be the highest peak in the world until the mid-1800s. The area was closed to trekkers until the mid-1980s, and today it is protected by the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. As such, a special trekking permit is required to trek in the area, ensuring that the unique flora and fauna remain in pristine condition.

In addition to the main peak of Kanchenjunga, there are four subsidiary summits exceeding 8,000m, the most important being Kanchenjunga West, also known as Yalung Kang (8,505m). The region also boasts approximately twenty peaks exceeding 7,000m, including Kambachen (7,903m), Janu (7,710m), Jongsong (7,483m), Kabru (7,353m), Tent Peak (7,365m), and the Twins (7,350m). Moreover, there are numerous peaks over 6,000m, and five major glacial systems, including Zumu, Talung, Rathong, Kanchenjunga, and Yalung glaciers.

Trekking in Kanchenjunga is a truly unforgettable experience, taking trekkers right into the heart of the remote and less trekked Himalayan mountains and valleys. With the recent addition of the Great Himalayan Trail to the trekking map, tourism is being promoted in remote areas like Kanchenjunga. As a result, there is an increasing number of teahouses along the route. Now is the perfect time to go on this adventure before more trekkers discover this hidden gem, contributing to the local communities' growth.
